More Info Regarding File Extension 3GP
.3gp files can be transferred to a computer via a direct cable connection, Bluetooth connection, or email. They can be opened for viewing by a variety of software packages including VLC Media Player, MPlayer, Quicktime, Totem, RealPlayer, and Windows Media Player. VLC and MPlayer claim to work out of the box, especially in Linux and BeOS, while the Windows and Mac products may need additional codecs to work properly. Due to the compressed nature of .3gp files, they cannot be edited in their native state. Instead they must be converted to an editable format such as .avi, .wmv, or .mov. These formats can be converted back to .3gp for use on a mobile device, provided the file size doesn't exceed the device's capacity. Conversion programs known to support .3gp include Free 3GP Video Converter, AVS Video Editor, Xilisoft 3GP Converter, Oxelon Media Converter, and Mobile 3GP converter.
The most common error associated with .3gp files is one of simple file association. Most operating systems do not include the extension in their default associations, so it must be created by the user. Double clicking on an unassociated .3gp file may trigger a dialogue box asking what to do with the file, or an error message stating that it cannot be opened. Users should consult their OS documentation to learn how to create the proper file association.
Codec errors are also fairly common when trying to play, convert, or edit .3gp files. In many cases, 3rd party players and conversion programs utilize Apple's Quicktime environment ,which in older versions does not natively support 3GP. Users may experience an "unable to convert" or "unknown format" error, or possibly a software freeze or crash when attempting to convert to another format. Making sure the Quicktime installation is updated and includes the latest version should solve these issues. In regards to player errors, Windows based machines are notorious for lacking codecs needed by 3rd party programs. Downloading and installing the needed codecs resolves these errors. A small amount of DRM issues have also been reported by Vista users, though no solutions have made available.
As with any file transferred across a network, data corruption is always a possibility. The greatest risk with .3gp files is during a wireless transfer between the mobile device and a computer. Transfers between the mobile device and its native network are less prone to errors due to the redundancy built in to those networks. If transfers between mobile device and a computer are interrupted they will almost always cause a mismatch error. The file's header will report the size of the completed file while the OS sees the actual size of the incomplete file. These mismatch errors are not recoverable and a new download must be done.
